FAQ

When are you open?
Wednesdays and Saturdays from noon-3pm, but always check the website for updates before heading over.

How can I donate books to The Book Exchange?

  • First, check the Books We Want page for a full description of the children’s books we accept.  Note that we cannot accept most fiction or non-fiction written for adults. Books must be in good to excellent condition.
  • Bring your books during our regular open hours.  If you need to bring books at other times, please place them on the shelves outside our doors (don’t leave books or boxes on the ground).
  • If you have questions about donating books, please email us.

Is my book donation tax-deductible?
Yes, we can provide a tax receipt.

Can I send books to The Book Exchange?
No. Unfortunately, books cannot be shipped or mailed to our Del Ganado address.

Where do the donated books go?
Most books are given free to schoolchildren from Marin’s Title 1 schools.  The Book Exchange funds weekly school literacy field trips to our facility, where we help children choose books to take home for free.  We also provide books to other non-profit organizations (food banks, clinics, etc.) who assist these communities.

What is a Title 1 school?
Title 1 is a federal K-12 program that provides additional academic support and learning opportunities for students at schools with high percentages of socioeconomically disadvantaged children.

Can anyone come in and get books?
Yes. Everyone is welcome during our open hours!  We encourage teachers, parents, families and staff of non-profits to visit us.  Books are low cost and proceeds help fund our work.  Please see more on our Get Books page.

I would like to volunteer; how can I get involved?
The Book Exchange is run entirely by volunteers.  We especially appreciate assistance from local teachers (retired teachers and librarians, please come see us!), middle and high school students, parents and neighborhood folks.  Please email us if you would like to volunteer your time at The Book Exchange.  We would love to have your help!  See more on our Volunteer page.

How can I make a monetary donation?
Your financial contributions enable us to get free books to kids who may not have books at home.  We are a non-profit organization; donated dollars are used to support our project and do not benefit any individuals.  All donations are tax-deductible.  Please see our Donate Dollars page to donate via PayPal, credit card, Venmo or check.
